Service 607, Hampshire

Update an existing Fire alarm with new that fully conforms to BS5839.

Date of Works: Summer 2023

Client: The S's

When you think of a domestic fire alarm, you may think of beeping batteries and annoying sound when you burn the toast. We have all been there.

When your house is over 45,000 sq feet in floor space, with over 60 rooms and various other ancillary spaces, things get a little bit more complicated. Even more so when you can’t simply change like for like anymore. The original system is over 20 years old, and, did not meet the British standard requirement then any more than it does today.

So, how do you solve a problem like this? We spoke to Channel safety systems in Hampshire about a product that runs on lithium batteries but meets the British Standard requirements of a property of this scale. Houses of this size need a full system, with alerting, indication and depending on insurers, attendance by the Fire service on alarm.

The new system will need its batteries changing every 3 years, so we will propose a every second-year change to ensure no issues. In addition, the system self diagnoses too so it will let us know if there is a failing part or a battery which has not got the life it should have.

The alternate would be to wire a system, to over 80 locations, in a beautiful, old, and habitable home, with cables throughout causing endless disruption and damage.

Not an option in our eyes and a decision that the owner is happy about too. We have met the safety requirements with an eye on how to achieve this sensibly from the outset.
